To celebrate the season of the gridiron, we’re offering some delectable ideas for one-bowl meals to satisfy hearty appetites along with some ideas for those who want to keep things “light” after holiday indulgence. Meals in a bowl tend to be easy to make and even easier to clean up, so cooks can get in on some game time, too. With these simple recipes and a few basic Kikkoman sauces on hand, you’re ready to jump into Bowl season.
Make a batch or two of Tex-Mex Chili and enjoy the savoriness of black beans, green beans, browned ground beef and Kikkoman Less Sodium Soy Sauce mingling with your favorite prepared salsa. Toppers of sour cream and cilantro complete the perfect meal. Just add spoons! (Note that you can always lighten your chili up by substituting ground turkey for the beef.)
Classic Sweet & Sour Pork always scores with a crowd. Our recipe is a breeze with the help of Kikkoman Sweet & Sour Sauce —a perfectly balanced blend of tomato paste, pineapple, onion, and spicy red pepper. It’s a great shortcut you always want to have on hand. And remember, it makes a super dip for chicken wings.
Never underestimate the power of a supply of ramen noodles. They’re inexpensive and you can dress them up with very little effort for oodles of flavor in a bowl. This recipe for Spicy Ramen Noodle Salad shows you how to enjoy the slithery noodles cold or at room temperature. Fresh snow peas, carrots and green onions and Kikkoman Soy Sauce “up” the flavor and a creamy, spicy peanut dressing ties it all together. This is one of those recipes you can whip up at a moment’s notice—fast food that’s good for you and yours.
Since time in front of the TV can get a little out of hand during mid-winter, not to mention football season, it couldn’t hurt to make some of those party munchies a little healthier. Consider this:
Until recently, Western taste physiology experts traditionally talked about four basic flavors: sweet, salty, sour and bitter. But the Japanese include a fifth flavor: umami, often translated as "delicious," "savory," or "brothy." Many fermented products have this quality, including naturally brewed Kikkoman Soy Sauce. You don’t have to give up guacamole! Naturally creamy avocados provide “healthy” fat. Just watch the chips and add veggies for dipping, too. Our recipe for Chunky Western Guacamole incorporates the added flavor of Kikkoman Soy Sauce for a boost of “umami” (oo-ma-mee).
Popcorn is the perfect low-fat (and low cost) snack if you pass by the microwave versions and make it the old-fashioned way—air popped at home or popped in a couple of tablespoons of vegetable oil. Toss with a little sea salt and rosemary and just a smidgen of melted butter. The rosemary will go a long way.
