How to make the perfect salad? Here are some tips to ensure excellent results:
- Wash, dry and sort through salad greens as soon as you come home from the store. Store greens in airtight plastic containers with layers of paper towels.
- Tearing lettuce causes less bruising than cutting leaves with a knife.
- Dress potato and pasta salads while they are still warm to absorb more dressing and flavor. Be sure to taste the salad again when cool and before serving to adjust for seasoning.
- Dress leafy green and fruit salads just before serving, using just enough dressing to coat the ingredients evenly.
- If you are not sure how much dressing to use, start with less than you think you need, then toss in more until salad is dressed. Too much dressing will wilt the leaves quickly.
- Plan for leftovers from basic main dishes such as grilled chicken, steak or seafood; slice them to use in a main course salad the next day.
- Make double or triple the amount of salad dressing you will need, then keep the remainder on hand in the refrigerator.
