If you're reading this, you're on the Internet, taking advantage of the most sweeping change in communications since the telephone. This August marks the 35th anniversary of the "information superhighway."

It all started with the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense in 1962. Electronic engineers at the ARPA Agency wanted to create a network so that users of various computers could talk to one another, especially in the event of a disaster. The result, the ARPANET, was soon embraced by U.S. scientific and academic researchers. And it became the forerunner of the Internet and the Worldwide Web. Without getting all technical about the rest of it, let's just say thanks to those visionary pioneers!
