A note from our President

Dear friends,

A lot has changed since 1957, when Kikkoman Corporation established its North American subsidiary, Kikkoman International, Inc. (known today as Kikkoman Sales USA, Inc.). In those days, soy sauce was an unfamiliar ingredient found mostly in Chinese and Japanese restaurants.

But America’s tastes were expanding, and Kikkoman wanted to be a part of that. We believed that if we could show American cooks that soy sauce is not just for Asian cooking, Kikkoman would find a place in the American pantry, right alongside the ketchup, the mustard, the salt and the pepper.

Today, that dream has become a reality. Soy sauce has become one of North America’s favorite seasonings, and Kikkoman is far and away the leading brand. And although we’ve added many convenient sauce and seasoning products to our lineup, our core product, traditionally brewed soy sauce, has remained unchanged. It is brewed slowly, from water, soybeans, wheat, and salt, and aged for full flavor like a fine wine, just as it has been for centuries.

We thank you for welcoming us into your homes and your hearts over the last six decades, and we look forward to sharing a place at the table with you for many years to come.

Three Centuries ofKikkoman Craftsmanship

Soy sauce is one of the world’s oldest seasonings and condiments, dating back more than 2,000 years. Over the centuries, it found its way to Japan, where the traditional fermentation process was refined and perfected to create shoyu, the rich flavorful seasoning we know as soy sauce today.

It was there that Kikkoman’s story began more than three centuries ago. In the mid-1600s, a resourceful family set up a brewery in the farming community of Noda along the Edo river, not far from present-day Tokyo.

And today, nearly twenty generations later, their descendants still run what has become the world’s leading soy sauce brand.

The Kikkoman Story

Every product tells a story. And every company has a history. But as one of the world’s oldest food companies, the story of our products and the history of our company come together in a single word: heritage.

A Name that Tells a Story

The name Kikkoman has proved to be a fitting one. In Japanese, kikko means “tortoise shell” and man means “ten thousand.” In Japan, the tortoise is a traditional symbol of steady progress and longevity, since, according to Japanese folklore, the animal is believed to live as long as ten thousand years. The company’s founding families had a vision that their company would prosper and endure, and they were right. The centuries-old Kikkoman logo—a hexagon, representing the tortoise shell, with the character for “ten thousand” in the center—is one of the world’s oldest brand-marks still in continuous use.
